Figure 12-3. Three threads in a process and their associated access tokens Figure 12-3 shows an example of a threaded process and the access tokens assigned at the process and thread level. Notice that the process is running under the security context in Token X. You can see from the diagram that the process has three threads running inside it, and that the process created Thread A and Thread B in the default manner by copying Token X to the individual threads. Thread C, however, runs under the security context of Token Z, giving it different permissions than Threads A and B. Whenever a process launches another process, the calling process copies its access token to the new process. This ensures that the newly created process runs under the same security context of the parent process. Like threads, the parent process has the capability to authenticate an account and create a new access token for the new process. You should rarely be creating an entirely new process from an ASP.NET application, but if you do, understand that it runs using the same security context of the process or thread from which it was launched.

The Welcome Center, shown in Figure 6-1, is a useful portal to the most commonly used features of Vista that are not immediately accessible through the Start menu (although it soon becomes apparent that they are not hard to find even without the Welcome Center). When you first see the Welcome Center, take note of the opt-out checkbox in the bottom-left corner. Once you become more familiar with Vista and no longer need the Welcome Center to appear every time you log in, uncheck this box.

Tip Executing processes from an ASP.NET application is usually indicative of bad design. Process execution is not very scalable, so think about redesigning the application to avoid calling external processes.

When running in OOB mode, you can get a reference to the application s main window like so: Window window = Application.Current.MainWindow; This window object provides you with a number of properties, methods, and events that enable you to interact with and manipulate it.

NOTE If you stop the Welcome Center from opening automatically on login, you can always access it again at any time in the future through the Start menu (Start All Programs Accessories Welcome Center).

You can alter the security context for an ASP.NET applications or individual users by implementing impersonation. A general overview of impersonation and delegation are given next, and configuring impersonation and delegation are discussed later in the chapter.

Note Many of these properties and methods are needed particularly when you have turned on custom chrome. Custom chrome is discussed in detail later in the chapter.

Impersonation allows you to run a process or thread using the security context of a different account instead of inheriting the security context from the current process or thread. This can be very useful in ASP.NET because ASP.NET normally runs under the least privileged ASPNET account in IIS 5 and Network Service in IIS 6, which has limited access to system resources.

Using the reference to the window, you can close it using its Close method: Application.Current.MainWindow.Close(); You can detect when the window is being closed, and cancel it by handling its Closing event. You can use the WindowState property of the window to maximize it, minimize it, or return it to normal.
